Bar stools and counter stools are a great feature for kitchen islands, counter areas, game rooms and more. What's the difference between the two? Bar height stools are slightly higher than counter stools; bar stools typically have seat heights of 30" to 32" high while counter height stool seat heights are 24" to 26" high.

If you have a kitchen or work surface with a standard 36" high countertop, a counter stool is the perfect height. For the normal bar height of 42" high, a bar stool is the right choice. No matter what the choice, plan on leaving 8" to 12" of leg room for maximum comfort.

If your counter height is non–standard, or if you have children in the household, then an adjustable bar or counter stool is a great alternative. These stools easily adjust to both bar and counter height, and can be fine–tuned to the height and size of the user. For even more flexibility and comfort, look for stools with swivel seats and stools with footrests.
