Design professionals have long used decorative ceiling medallions to accent chandeliers and other types of ceiling fixtures. At Lamps Plus, we offer two types of high-quality designer medallions: Giclee printed ceiling medallions that install with adhesive or drywall screws, and peel and stick Repositionable medallions. Both are based on original, hand-painted artwork done in California by our staff artists. Best of all, both types are easy to install. Here's how:

Installing Repositionable Designer Ceiling Medallions

Our new line of repositionable designer ceiling medallions is easy to install and offers a designer look, perfect for dining rooms, foyers, bedrooms and more. Each peel-and-stick medallion graphic is printed on a special lightweight canvas using a fine art reproduction process, and will adhere to ceilings without any adhesive or screws.

To Install Repositionable Ceiling Medallions:

  1. Make sure that the lighting fixture is removed from the area.
  2. Peel the medallion from the backing and position it on the ceiling around the junction box opening. Our repositionable medallions are made with a sticky backing, allowing them to be installed and removed dozens of times.
  3. Use a wallpaper brush or smoother to remove any air bubbles.
  4. Finish by re-installing your lighting fixture.

Please note that these ceiling graphics will hold fast and stick well to any smooth, indoor ceiling surface. However, textured ceilings, popcorn ceilings, paneling or other types of non-drywall surfaces may not be suitable for these designs. We also recommend waiting several days after painting before installing your new repositionable medallion.

Installing Decorative Giclee Ceiling Medallions

Lightweight and durable, the medallions can be fixed to a ceiling surface with an adhesive, or by several drywall screws. Made from a super lightweight polyurethane resin, they may even be painted to match your room's existing ceiling color. Use them with existing lights, or for a complete style upgrade, install them alongside a new lighting fixture.

To Install Ceiling Medallions with New Fixtures:

  1. Turn off the power to the light fixture at the breaker panel or fuse box.
  2. Do a dry-run assembly of all the medallion and chandelier or fixture pieces on the floor before proceeding, just to make sure everything fits. Depending on your ceiling opening, you may also find it necessary to enlarge the center hole of the medallion.
  3. After checking placement of the medallion against the ceiling, apply just enough adhesive glue to the back of the medallion so that the adhesive doesn't ooze out when the medallion is set in place. Applying the glue about an inch in from the medallion edge is a good rule of thumb. Allow a minimum of two hours for the adhesive to finish drying.
  4. Apply a bead of caulk at the perimeter of the medallion to cover any gaps between it and the ceiling surface. Smooth the caulk using your finger or a damp sponge. Once the caulk has dried, you can paint the medallion to match your existing ceiling décor.
  5. Finally, hang and wire the chandelier or ceiling fixture and attach the fixture's decorative ceiling cap or flushmount as normal, making it tight against the surface of the medallion or ceiling.

To Install Ceiling Medallions with Your Existing Fixtures:

  1. Begin by turning off the power to the light fixture at the breaker panel or fuse box.
  2. With the power off, carefully remove the light fixture -- usually held into place with a couple of screws and-or a nut on a short length of threaded tubing. Lower the fixture canopy and carefully disconnect the wires. This is a great time to give the fixture a good cleaning or polishing.
  3. With the fixture down, simply follow the instructions above, installing the medallion, then reinstalling your ceiling fixture.
