  • It'll Smile Back?

Green Star Mirror at LAMPS PLUS

People often overlook buying mirrors for their children's rooms. That's unfortunate, because children are fascinated with mirrors.

A great trick is to put a mirror on the wall near a changing table to keep the baby busy while you're changing them. The National Science and Technology Centre in Australia has also has some great games you can play with older children and mirrors.

We recently added a really fun selection of kids' room mirrors with light weight plastic frames.

We love these portable LED book lights from Mighty Bright. They're great for students, late night readers, camping and more.

Mighty Bright also makes non-LED book lights in the same candy-colored hues.

These make the perfect stocking stuffers for Christmas!

  • Rethink the Look of Your Guest Bath

    Bathroom Light and Mirror Picture

The bathroom needs plenty of even, shadow-free lighting for shaving, grooming, and applying makeup. In a smaller bath, mirror lights will illuminate the entire room, but in larger spaces an additional ceiling fixture is needed for general lighting.

Placing light fixtures on each side of the above-sink mirror will illuminate both sides of the face evenly.

Fixtures equipped with incandescent or fluorescent bulbs behind glass or plastic diffusers provide very good, flattering light.

You can also mount an additional fixture across the top of the mirror or from the ceiling.

Take a look at the bathroom lighting options included in our Holiday Sale. New lighting fixtures are quick, easy way to update and brighten your guest bath.

To give your bath more personal charm and a warmer look, try adding an iron bathroom fixture. Iron sconces in the bath provide an interesting natural texture that is warm and rustic.

Another big, continuing trend places crystal in the bath for an added sparkle and a pampered spa feel. We have seen contemporary crystal wall fixtures do well, but more traditional mini-pendants can also work for larger spaces.

  • How to Dress Up Your Recessed Lighting

    Roman Pattern Recessed Light Trim

Many of us have recessed lighting in our homes or apartments. If you want to make them less plain, add a new plastic trim ring to get a more sophisticated look.

These designs have been featured in Country Home magazine and come in several different patterns. A snap to install, you can leave them the crisp white or paint to match your ceiling color. Art Deco Trim, Victorian Trim, Egyptian Trim, Florentine Trim, Roman Trim.

  • Turn on the Green in Outdoor Lighting

Lander Heights ENERGY STAR Outdoor Wall LightThe Partnership for Advancing Technology in Housing (PATH) is a voluntary partnership between leaders of the homebuilding industries and representatives of Federal agencies concerned with housing.

They recently released their PATH Remodeling Top 10 home projects to make homes more energy efficient. On the list, rightly so, is the use of compact fluorescent lighting.

What often gets overlooked, however, is the use of CFL lighting outdoors. With shorter daylight hours at this time of the year, outdoor lighting is left on more hours a day for both security and decoration.

Using an ENERGY STAR rated outdoor lighting or switching to CFL bulbs in outdoor fixtures can make a world of difference in your outdoor lighting energy usage.

The BlissLight Starfield Projector is a light box that projects out a laser-powered moving starfield.

  • Dick Idol North Carolina State Wolfpack Statue

In addition to being the creative vision behind the Dick Idol lighting and home decor collection, Dick Idol is also one of America's best-known authentic outdoorsman and wildlife artists.

We found this online video of his most recent commission for the North Carolina State University Wolfpack Club, a non-profit organization that provides scholarships for NCSU student-athletes.

The almost 30-foot tall bronze monument includes six wolves on a mountain with dramatic water, lighting, and audio effects. Impressive, though the High Country table lamp might make a better fit for your living room!

  • What Do I Do If a CFL Fluorescent Light Bulb Breaks?

Fluorescent light bulbs, including CFL bulbs, contain a very small amount of mercury sealed within the glass tubing. If the bulb breaks, the EPA recommends the following procedure to properly clean-up and dispose of the bulb.

    1. Open a window and leave the room for 15 minutes or more.
    2. Carefully scoop up the fragments and powder with stiff paper or cardboard
and place them in a sealed plastic bag. Do not use a vacuum or broom to clean up the broken bulb on hard surfaces. Wipe with a damp paper towel.
    3. Place all cleanup materials in a second sealed plastic bag.
    4. If a fluorescent bulb breaks on a rug or carpet, remove all materials you can without using a vacuum cleaner, following the steps above. Sticky tape (such as duct tape) can be used to pick up small pieces and powder.
    5. If vacuuming is needed after all visible materials are removed, vacuum the area where the bulb was broken, remove the vacuum bag (or empty and wipe the canister) and put the bag or vacuum debris in two sealed plastic bags.

If properly recycled, 100 percent of the mercury in a fluorescent or CFL bulb is reusable! Want to learn more? Read this ENERGY STAR star FAQ sheet on CFLs (in PDF form) or these EPA cleanup guidelines. Or find a CFL recycling center near you.
