  • 2010 Year End Link Roundup

    Bali Tropical Floor Lamp

Before 2010 goes out like a lion, here's one final roundup of links and articles that have caught our eye. Best wishes for a prosperous New Year from all of us at Lamps Plus!

Jaime at Shelter Pop included the National Geographic Bali Floor Lamp (above) in a floor lamp hunt blog post, saying, "Something about this National Geographic Floor Lamp, $199, from Lamps Plus, is so dreamy. Maybe it's the fact that it's called the Bali lamp and we need a vacation? The pleated bamboo shade reminds us of island huts. If you're looking for something with a every-so-slight tropical flair, explore this option."

    Old Cottage Photo

From a Minneapolis Star Tribune article, a tour of a charming antique cottage that has a surprising secret: "...this house in Minneapolis' Linden Hills neighborhood is brand-spanking new. Most of it, anyway. The oak trim is new. So is the stucco, the roof, the kitchen, the landscaping, the lighting and the master suite." Photo above thanks to the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

    Pink Bathroom

The New York Times writes about a the return of the pink bathroom. "But within the last five years, pink has come back into vogue, with more people...embracing their vintage pink bathrooms rather than taking a sledgehammer to them. Moreover, interior designers now advocate flattering rosy hues for new or renovated bathrooms. And manufacturers of bathroom tiles and fixtures have been introducing more pink options. Noticing the trend, the color authority Pantone this month decreed that hot pink will be the “it” color of 2011." Embrace the pink! Photo above thanks to The New York Times.

  • New Dimmable LED Light Bulb

    Dimmable LED LIght Bulb Photo

LED light bulbs offer some great advantages - such as they'll last for decades, and are super energy efficient. In most cases, however, they aren't dimmable.

Enter the Pharox 300 LED light bulb.

    Dimmable LED Bulb

It's dimmable via most standard wall and line dimmers, a big advantageg compared with other LED light bulbs.

And it uses just 6 watts of energy with an output equal to a 60 watt incandescent bulb - that's at least an 80% energy saving over regular bulbs.

Life expectancy up to 35 times longer than incandescent bulbs, so with standard use it will last an amazing 25 years.

    So dim away!

  • Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas!

All of us here at LAMPS PLUS would like to wish you and your family a joyous and safe holiday season.

We thought we'd share with you a couple of photos of our company Christmas tree. The team loaded it up this year with holiday lights and ornaments.

Again, best wishes from all of us, and we hope you have a wonderful Christmas and holiday!

  • LED Christmas Lights Go Mobile

Finally ... someone figured out how to control colorful LED lights with a cell phone!

A company called MEA Mobile has created the iGloLEDset which, besides being a mouthful to say, is a pretty cool piece of engineering. Multicolor LED light strips up to 50 feet long can be controlled by computer via Wi-Fi. Or use your iPhone, iPad or Android phone to put on an interactive light show that responds to a flick of your finger. What will they think of next?

Create the raddest Christmas tree ever, or add spectacular light effects to a game room. Where would you put the iGloLEDset??

Check out some cool videos at MEA's YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/MEAmobile

Thanks to AndroidGuys.com for the tip.

  • Christmas at Meadowbrook Hall

    Meadow Brook Hall in Winter

With Christmas almost upon us, here are some beautiful photos from Meadowbrook Hall to help you get in a holiday mood.

Meadow Brook Hall is a Tudor style mansion (OK, more like a castle) in suburban Detroit's Rochester Hills. It now sits on the grounds of Oakland University, but was originally built by Matilda Dodge Wilson, widow of automobile pioneer John Dodge, and her second husband, lumber baron Alfred G. Wilson.

The home is decorated each year for a special Holiday Walk. I remember attending several times as a boy with my mom and grandmother. If you are in the area, it's a great experience and the perfect way to usher in the holiday season.

    Meadow Brook Hall Christmas Tree

There are dozens of rooms decorated with trees and holiday wreaths, and holiday lights. The interiors of the house are elaborately detailed with carved wood and stone.

    Meadow Brook Hall Chistmas Decorations

Details from one of the many decorated Christmas trees on display.

    Meadow Brook Hall Sitting Room

Here's a beautiful holiday tree in a spacious sitting area.

There are many such events around the country, so get out there and explore! What are the holiday walks or decorated historic homes in your area?

  • Get Creative with Daybeds and Ottomans

Barcelona Daybed Mies Van der Rohe

As found in the pages of the SFGate.com, the editors of Houzz gathered together some interesting pictures of stylish daybeds. As the article states, "There are lots of...styles available that look more like pieces of furniture, and many are still suitable for sleeping."

The daybed offers flexibility and, in may designs, a lighter look than traditional seating or sofas.

Case in point is the modern classic Barcelona Daybed (up top), by Mies Van der Rohe. Contemporary ottomans and daybeds such as this present themselves as modern objects of art.

    Convertible Sofa

A modern, contemporary daybed look that also converts into a sofa is this Zuo convertible sofa design (above).

    Daybed Sofa

Daybed-style sofas, like the one pictured above, offer a comfterable place for seating or lounging. The backless design is lighter and takes up less visual space. In this case, the backless design offers a view to the courtyard outside the windows.

    Asian Daybed

This daybed has a Javanese feel, with it's slat sides and tall canopy. Like many of the daybeds we offer, it can be used as seating in the day, then be turned into a sleeping bed at night.

We like the look! See the article for more photos. Room photos thanks to Houzz and SFGate.com.

Addendum: Please note the items pictured in the room scenes are for inspiration and not necessarily available through Lamps Plus.

  • Get Inspired: An Art Deco Apartment in Baltimore

    Art Deco Wall Mirror

Here's a little design inspiration from the shores of Chesapeake Bay. This Art Deco-styled apartment is in Baltimore's Cantoon neighborhood.

As profiled in this Baltimore Sun article, the owner and designer based the interiors on the lifestyle idea of a successful bachelor with the desire to live in "...uptown, sophisticated ambience, which to the owner meant art deco-inspired furnishings."

    Art Deco Living Room

The furniture grouping consists of a beige micro-fiber sofa, a leather armchair abd neutral fabric ottomoans. The Deco style mirror creates a dramatic sense of light and space. I like the dramatic Art Deco floor lamp beside the mirror.

    Baltimore Harbor Photo

The four-story brick home fronts the water's edge of Baltimore's Inner Harbor East. There are two deck with water views and an unobstructed view of downtown buildings.

    Art Deco Bedroom

The bedroom features persimmon-colored walls and mahogany furniture with silk bed linens. A more contemporary floor lamp fills the room corner with light.

    Rachel Simon Floor Lamp

For a lighter touch, this Rachel Simon Lights Up! floor lamp (above) would have made a nice fit.

A very successful look! As the owner says, "It's satisfying to have all the hard work come together...It's relaxing to be here."

Apartment photos thanks to the Baltimore Sun.
