Single colored sofas are everywhere.  Incorporating a patterned piece of furniture here or there adds an unexpected element to the room, especially if the pattern has a vibrant palette.

To play it on the safe side, a neutral palette makes patterned chairs easy to coordinate with all decor.  

To really take this look seriously, patterns in lively colors like magentas, purples and yellows show that you're ready to grab the bull by the horns.

When using pieces the size of chairs or smaller, like ottomans or accessories, I say the more graphic the pattern the better.  

Patterns are a fun, tasteful way to add your personal style to a space.  If you have housemates who shy away from patterns, ease them in with patterns that are smaller and use muted colors.
