Shopping Flea Markets

I remember when I first graduated high school and moved to California. I was excited to have my own place for the first time. Decorating your first place can be a challenge when you have a tight budget and not much furniture to start off with.

There are a few ways to approach the design, go to an inexpensive furniture store and purchase everything all in one swoop or be patient and collect quality pieces over time. At the end of the day, your home should be a place you love to come home to. Furnishing your new space with furniture and accessories you love doesn't have to be expensive. Below are a few tips for making the most out of your design budget.

1. Shop Sales: If you are patient, you would be surprised by the deals you can find by sifting through your favorite stores' sale merchandise. Hint - the bigger sales usually coincide with a major holiday or the beginning of a season (i.e. the Memorial Day sale, the 4th of July sale, summer sale, etc.).

2. Check out Local Flea Markets: My friend recently picked up a large vintage trunk for $50 from the Melrose flea market. If you don't find what you are looking for try another flea market or go again the next week. When shopping flea markets make sure to go early to get the best merchandise.

3. Look for Fabric Wholesalers or Shop the Downtown Fashion District: In Los Angeles, we are lucky to have a great downtown market with many different options for budget fabrics. Pick up a few bold pattern fabrics to add color and texture to your space. Don't be afraid to ask around to find someone to make drapes out of the fabric.

4. Shop Flash Sale Websites: There are a number of flash sale websites that provide up to 70% off furniture and home goods. The sales typically last only 3 days and the best items sell out fast, so sign up for their daily e-mails to be informed of upcoming sales.

At the end of the day, remember that a design evolves over time and will come together piece by piece.
