Traditional Furnishings in a Downtown Loft: Brooke & Sam's Urban Home

Traditional Furnishings in a Loft Bedroom

Brooke and Sam moved from a larger, more traditional home into a loft in downtown Los Angeles. When they moved into the loft, they didn't have a budget to purchase new furnishings. Therefore, they were forced to make the traditional decor work within the industrial and modern architecture of their loft space.

The traditional furniture gave the loft a completely different feel than any of the other spaces in the building. When I first visited Brooke and Sam in their home, I immediately felt welcomed by the warm tones and rich woods. It felt like a home versus a raw space.

The side table in the entry way sets the tone for the decor style in the home. The curved lines of the base of the table provides a softer feel versus a more modern piece with straight lines and right angles. After a long day of work, Brooke and Sam come home to a display of family photos, candles, and fresh flowers.

Most evenings you can find Sam stretched out on the leather sofa relaxing with a beer and catching up on sports highlights. Brooke tells me that sometimes he doesn't move from the sofa for hours. Design aesthetics are important to the style of the home, but one should never take comfort and function for granted.

I have been to many homes where they had the most beautiful modern furniture with great lines, but the pieces lacked comfort. Brooke and Sam's sofa calls for guests to sit down and relax. I am so impressed how they have managed to make a very traditional leather sectional work in a loft space!

Brooke and Sam work hard, but also know when it is time to unwind and relax at home. Their Drake Barrel Back Chairs provide casual seating for guests while they are cooking in the kitchen. For a similiar look check out Lamps Plus' Grant Leather Wing Chair.  The style of the chairs is a take on traditional English fireside chairs. You wouldn't expect them in an industrial loft space, but this is why Brooke and Sam's place is so special. The mirror above the chairs reflects the kitchen and solidifies the casual seating area.

The large curio cabinet in the living room stores family photos and treasured books. Its large scale commands the space and rich wood tones blend in with the overall warm color scheme.

Traditional Furnishings in a Loft Kitchen

An inviting and well designed kitchen makes a home. Instead of leaving the cooking area and island minimal, they filled the space with kitchen essentials that they love. If you look closely you will notice, that the kitchen utensils over the sink are hanging on a towel bar. I love the extra bit of attention to detail in the kitchen to make the space both functional and unique.

The image above features a detail of the towel bar/utensil holder. Since Brooke and Sam are inspired by travel and red wine, you will find smaller accessories and decor in their kitchen that reflects their taste.

They were fortunate that their loft unit included a large bathroom; however, there was no cabinetry in the bathroom. Brooke took the baker's rack that was meant for the kitchen and incorporated it into the bathroom. It gave them both storage space and an area to display perfumes and smaller decor items. When I saw the piece, I never would have guessed that it was a baker's rack and belonged in the kitchen. It proved to be a great bathroom storage solution!

The view outside of their historic loft building overlooks Angel's Knoll Park and the famous Angels Flight in Los Angeles. (You may remember Angel's Knoll Park from the movie "500 Days of Summer.") Brooke and Sam continue to enjoy downtown living and the view from their high rise home.

  • Really nice photos and post. Love seeing these types of features! I do think that their loft could use a dash of color though.
