I love holiday traditions: the big meals, the family gatherings, the sights, smells, and sounds. But when it comes to my holiday home decor, I like to put a twist on the expected. In my space you won't find any glitter, tinsel, or major glitz. I like to inject sparkle for the holidays with just the soft glow of lights and the shimmer of metallics.
My favorite approach is a neutral one. Shades of black, white, silver, and gold remind me of a winter landscape in Northern Europe. Who wouldn't love a stroll through a chilly holiday market with a cup of hot cider? Summon the feeling at home with accents like a gilt tray or decorative pillows that have a touch of reflective trim.
If you must have color this time of year, pick a narrow palette and stick with it. I like a fun range of hues like magenta, teal, silver, and yellow--the combination is playful and unexpected for the holidays. Sprinkle a few sequins on the tabletop, invest in some bright candle holders (in colors like these they can be used in at other times of the year!), and boring old red and green will be a thing of the past!
Now get going and add some sparkle for the holidays!
