  • Interior Design Inspiration: Jean-Louis Deniot

    Jean-Louis Deniot

    Interior design inspiration, Jean-Louis Deniot.

I have found true interior design inspiration... Jean-Louis Deniot is the last word when it comes to artful interior design.

The Style Saloniste reviewed his new book and reproduced some wonderful images of his elegant interiors, which are fresh and modern with a nod to the past. While his interiors are global in reach they all begin with an eye to architectural integrity.

The physical rooms have marvelous proportion and detailing which act as the glorious backdrop to his furnishings and decor.

    Designer Living Rooms

Deniot's living room designs are elegant beyond words.

Deniot’s rooms have so much to look at that I could study them for hours. While his color palettes seem to be more monochromatic, his choice of furniture shapes and textures are sublime.

I was immediately drawn to his use of thoroughly unique lighting. He has no problem mixing quite varied styles of lighting in one room. From sculptural table lamps to inspired sconces, he can do no wrong when it comes to decoration.

    Modern Lighting

Deniot has a specific talent mixing and matching lighting styles.

Words fail me...sort of. Deniot’s knack for sumptuous finishes and the incorporation of juxtaposing metals are astounding. If ever there were images that prove you can mix metals and styles and thus create a gorgeous room, here is that proof.

    Contemporary Lighting

    1. I love the unexpected pop of green. To me, the Uttermost Alzavola Scalloped Dark Teal Table Lamp is totally modern.

    2. The Axis Brass Wall Sconce has sexy lines and would look divine in a living room, dining room or clubby library.

    3. I like the airy feeling of the Uttermost Becca Coffee Bronze Rings Table Lamp.

    4. The Petriolo 9-Light Deep Patina Bronze Chandelier will ground a room, especially in a dining room.

    5. I think the Bronze and Coffee Plated Finish Table Lamp has a modern Venetian feel.

  • White Interior Design Ideas

With snow on the ground in most parts of the country, white is all around us. Many are drawn to a white palette indoors as well since white evokes feelings of calm and cleanliness.

White interiors are never boring when layered with textural accents, a bit of metallic sheen, and the warmth of wood. If your preference in home décor is a mostly while palette, a pale color or soft neutral painted wall is one way to enhance a mostly white space.

White Interior Design Ideas With Textured Layers

Geometric modern shapes can introduce a sculptural element to a white space. Try a dramatic contemporary chandelier like this one below.

Wood tones in the form of flooring and chair legs add contrast and lots of warmth.

    Dramatic Chandeliers Add Personality

Dramatic chandeliers add lots of  style to a monotone space.

Patterned textiles and a blend of traditional furnishings with modern ones will add layers and interest to a white space.

Notice the modern desk paired with traditional tufted wingback chairs below. Also, a classic pedestal and a modern Eames rocker, all in white and wood tones.

    Different Furnishing Styles Add Interest

Mixing styles in a monotone space is one way to add layers and lots of interest.

Metal surfaces like oil rubbed bronze or brass will add contrast or sheen to a mostly white space, while white paneled walls and a sculptural lamp are more interesting than plain white surfaces.

Paneled Walls Add Texture To A Monotone Space

Paneled walls add interest to a monotone space.

Capture the appeal of a white interior with these home accents:

    Home Accents From Lamps Plus

Add drama to a space with a white silhouette fixture like the Parson White Chandelier.

You can introduce an Old World vibe with the Young Girl Antique Bust on a dresser or demilune.

The modern yet timeless white Fluted Table Lamp will add curves and shine to a nightstand or console table.

The Joslyn Tufted Modern Bed is an elegant focal point in any bedroom, while the shapely Cosgrove Lamp adds a sculptural element to a tabletop.

  • Moody Black Home Design

We all know about the Black Friday that happens after Thanksgiving - but this year I'm making today my very own Black Friday - Black Interiors Friday to be more precise.

These dark, moody, wintry black rooms will make you squirm for some delicious black wall paint in your home...

Moody Black Design For The Home

Moody, black design can add style to any home.

Let's start the party off right with this traditional, gone moody black, dining room. Black walls, chairs and dining table are accented with colorful books, accessories and a stunning crystal chandelier. Of course completed with little black shades.

Home Office With Moody Dark Style

Home office with moody black style.

The beautiful black and white graphic carpet adds a punch of fun and whimsy to this all-black home office, complete with the perfect black modern floor lamp.

    Black Modern Living Room Style

Not all modern living needs to be white.

This posh living room is the perfect juxtaposition of mid-century modern and contemporary furniture and finishes, or as I like to say "All black everything".

Black Walls Ground This Colorful Room

Colorful room design with bold, black walls.

Even in a round up of moody, black rooms this living room above has its own footing. Fuchsia sofas and leopard pillows definitely have power in this image, but this room wouldn't be half as fabulous if it weren't for the amazing black built-in bookcases.

    Art Wall With Black Background

Black walls will make your art pop.

Black walls make the perfect backdrop for an amazing gallery wall. Take your gallery wall to the next level by finding quirky portraits spanning the ages and you have one moody, broody sitting room.

  • Merry Christmas Eve!

    Christmas Eve

Believe it or not, it’s Christmas Eve. I hope the mad dash to complete your shopping was successful and you can now enjoy the warmth of friends, family and home.

I was fortunate to find some wonderful images on House and Home as well as Habitually Chic that capture the season in many design forms. I thought it would be fun to feature three looks; two conventional and one most unexpected... In case you're doing any last minute decorating.

    Traditional Christmas Decorating

    1. The Provincial Collection Charcoal Outdoor Wall Light is traditional and timeless.

Traditional Christmas decor is always going to be in style like a classic green wreath and Santa. Home spun homes look warm and welcoming with roaring fires, candy canes and classic stockings hung on the mantle.

I’m a fan of tying big red bows on decorative sconces and I think Colonial-Style outdoor wall lights look just as good when draped in garland and other natural holiday decorations like pine cones.

    Formal Christmas Tabletop Decoration

    2. Looking for a glamorous table lamp? The Magma Red Glass Antique Brass Mini Holtkoetter Desk Lamp evokes the elegance of Christmas.

Holidays can also be a time to go “all out” and throw caution to the wind when it comes decoration. If ever there was a time to use the good silver and dishes, now is the time. Silver, gold and red are a classic combination and look divine from tabletop to table lamp! Sometimes more is more.

Unexpected Blue and Green Christmas Decorations

    3. Lighting can be thoroughly whimsical like the Currey and Company Lana Turquoise Wall Sconce.

If you have thoughts about going rogue when it comes to holiday decorating, why not try new and bold color combinations. The turquoise and green above is dynamic, unexpected and totally modern. If you can dream it, you can make it holiday-chic. Here is wishing you a stylish holiday season.

  • Easy Organizing Ideas for 2015

Organizing Ideas For The New Year

As the year draws to a close and the halls are un-decked and the trees are tucked away in the attic and the new year arrives with all of it's hope and promise.....

    ...I make a vow.

This is the year I'm going to be organized.

    I know.

    I get it.

    I understand.

    Hope springs eternal.

So if you are like me and have some spaces around your home that need to be organized....

.....here are a few easy organizing ideas for 2015.

Use your extra wall space for organization opportunities.

    1.  The Walls Have It

Take another look at your vertical spaces. Create a clutter-free zone on a blank wall in your home, like this wall featured in Better Homes and Gardens.

Paint a wall with chalkboard paint and cover the remaining wall with stick-on cork you can find in any home improvement store.

Then add rods to hang paper towels and buckets from hooks and finish off the corner with bookshelves for extra storage.

    Track Lighting For Organization

Track lighting keeps your home well lit without taking space.

    2.  Light It Up

My favorite thing about this organized laundry space featured in Better Homes and Gardens is the lighting.

Simple track lighting helps focus the light where you need it and creates a brighter work space.

Built-ins and a simple space bar help to make laundry (almost) a breeze.

    3.  Home Office Essentials

Create a space in your home for a home office like this colorful corner from Better Homes and Gardens.

Add simple shelving above a desk and stack with brightly colored organizers and bins.

Tuck a fun office chair into the space and then hang a peg board on the wall and create a seven day organizer with patterned clipboards, one for every day of the week.

    how-to-organize

Storage with doors helps you stay clean and organized.

    4.  When One Door Closes....

Sometimes the best solution is to close the door on the subject.  Especially when the doors are made from beautiful barn wood, like this pantry featured on Apartment Therapy.

Barn door hardware can be found at any home improvement store to create a one-of-a-kind storage center.

Add a collection of white dishes and an over-sized clock to organize for style.

I really think that this is the year for an organized home.

I mean, after all, doesn't 2015 look like an organized set of numbers?

    Truly.

    I'll keep you posted...

It’s better to give than to receive, but sometimes finding the perfect gift for grandparents is easier said than done.

While I’m sure grandma and grandpa love mugs and tote bags emblazoned with photos and artwork from their grandkids, sometimes, it’s nice to treat these special family members to gifts that will wow them, like Thomas Kinkade lighting, picture frames or bookends.

  • Winter White Table Lamps

    Winter White Table Lamps

White table lamps look great in every room of the house.

Winter whites are so chic in fashion as well as interior design. White offers a blank slate for you to be creative with texture, shape, size and style.

The collage above showcases this perfectly with inspiration images ranging from an oversize modern table lamp from Lonny Mag, to a midcentury stylish entry lamp from Rue Vintage 74, to a quirky and playful desk lamp from Decor Pad.

Check out my round up below for the best wintery white table lamps this season.

    White Lighting From Lamps Plus

Lots of ideas for beautiful white lighting.

    White Table Lamps

You can really have fun with shape and scale with white table lamps while sticking to classics, wich creates a sophisticated and stylish design. On the left, the Harriet White Glass Table Lamp glows under the light it gives off and can pair very easily with a number of styles.

The Cosgrove Mid-Century White Ceramic Table Lamp on the right is fun, funky and perfect to add a cool punch to interior design.

    White Floor Lamps

I find that white is the perfect color if you are looking for stylish floor lamps. Geometric shapes really pop on white lamps, like the Ripley Multi-Facet Glossy White Contemporary Floor Lamp on the left. This floor lamp need not be hidden behind a chair or desk, but should be featured alongside it.

The same thing goes for the Ekko Reader Glossy White Spotlight Tripod Floor Lamp on the right. Both of these stylish lamps are a cool way to add indirect lighting to any room.

    White Desk Lamps

Desk lamps need to function, but it doesn't hurt if they also look white-HOT! Any time I talk about white design I need to incorporate some marble, and the Robert Abbey Jonathan Adler Canaan Modern Table Lampon the left is the perfect way to do it. This beautifully simple yet strong desk lamp is perfect for any home office and can be both masculine and feminine.

On the right we have a classic task lamp in a modern white finish. The Robert Abbey Real Simple White Boom Desk Lamp is beautiful, functional and on trend for a white hot winter.

  • Modern Christmas Decor Ideas

    Christmas Decontructed

Modern Christmas trees for the minimal home.

How do you define your home at Christmas? Modern? Deconstructed? Abundant? Old School red and green? Let’s backtrack and revisit what it means to pare-back decorations and reduce the overuse of holiday clutter.

If keeping it simple is something you would like to explore, Desire to Inspire has some great pictures for you. I had never thought about this rather avant-garde look, but it’s growing on me. There is something so fresh and modern about it, but most importantly it looks like it would take next to no time to put it up and take it down.

    Garland Christmas Decor

Holiday garland pops against white home decor.

I am in love with the black and white pictures taped to the wall in the shape of a tree and  totally obsessed with this clear glass vase look with simple evergreen sprigs. You could achieve very budget-friendly decor by picking up scrap twigs at the tree lot instead of a massive tree.

These simple sprigs could also be hung from decorative wall lamps or hang mistletoe from hanging pendant lights over the dining table. How fun would that be for dinner guests?

    Modern Christmas Accessories

White and green make a beautiful Christmas color palette.

If the traditionalist in you must have a tree, try a miniature version. These mini trees are super cute, will cost less and pose no real cleanup problems.

I must say all of these ideas tend to work best in clean and rather stark white spaces. It’s not to say you can’t create a version of this deconstructed look, but consider it, it could be liberating!

    Winter White Decor

    1. The Tarryton Industrial Chrome Mini-Pendant is simple and stylishly industrial.

    2. Banish swags with red velvet bows for the simplicity of the Silver Tin Stars Wall Decor Set of 3.

    3. The Possini Euro Design White Flower Pendant Chandelier is a Modernism classic.

    4. Uplight your tree with the LED Pro Track® White 50 Watt Accent Spot Light.

    5. The modern Christmas dinner could seem even more chic if enjoyed on the Set of 2 Pascal White Plastic Side Chairs.

    6. Tired of the traditional tree? The Uttermost Preserved Boxwood Tree Topiary with simple decorations could be a mess-free way to do Christmas.
