This is a functional work of art; a statement piece. I have received a number of compliments about it. People have stood, staring at it in awe. I like the soft, warm glow it emits from the flower bowl torchiere(shade) at the top. I put a dimmable cfl in it, which works great! It is extremely heavy, all one piece. When you find a place for it, that is where it will stay. I think it is some kind of wrought iron. The lamp is welded to the base. It is not a lamp to move around the room. You have to lift it out of the box in one piece, except for the bowl. The switch is at the base and you operate it with your foot. It also provides quite a bit of light in the room. Although you would normally place this lamp next to furniture, I placed it next to a mirror and it looks fine.
