Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I use this as a reading lamp in the living room. It has a great focus of light for reading, yet enough 'spill' to help even out illumination in the room. Seems to be well built. My only issue is that when using a non-CF bulb, the switch gets pretty hot, as it's directly above the bulb. We switched it over to a daylight balanced CF bulb and don't have the problem anymore, but if you use standard bulbs, it's something to consider...
