How to Decorate with a Club Chair

Originating in French design studios under the name fauteuil confortable (which literally means "comfy chair"), club chairs quickly rose to prominence in high-class clubs and social venues throughout mid-19th century Europe. Since then, their popularity has not waned. If anything, the club chair has been reimagined and incorporated in a host of homes and everyday setting, bringing with it elegance and luxurious comfort wherever it goes. 

1. Choose your style: Club chairs are known for their low backs, deep padded seats, and sturdy forms. Due to their original popularity in men's social clubs, some might characterize these designs as possessing a "masculine" energy, but modern adaptations are available with softer elements like ivory fabric upholstery and more streamlined modern frames. So look around your room—What style do you envision? If your space already incorporates dark woods, leather, and other rich details, a more traditional club chair might be the best fit. If your home leans into the realm of transitional or contemporary style, a more modern club chair is best.
2. Single or double? Depending on the size of your space and the arrangement of your furniture, one or two club chairs can work in the room. If you plan on adding an accent seat beside your sofa to round out the room, then a single club chair should work just fine. However, for libraries, offices, or smaller entertaining areas, a set of club chairs can be utilized instead of a sofa or loveseat. Doing so can "fill out" a space and make it feel more lively than an awkwardly placed couch.
