I have this in my home office, and love it. My work is very mental, and this provides a soothing background of bubbling water sounds. I wrote a previous review which did not get posted for some reason, in which I stated that the pump was way too loud, and that it was louder than the water sounds. That was true, but only for the first 2-3 days of continuous (24-hour) use. For whatever reason it began to sporadically quiet down, and now, I've been running it for a couple of weeks, and it's quiet. It's not silent, but it sounds about like an aquarium pump. It's fine.
