Dining Room Lighting Guide
Dining Room Light Fixtures for Low Ceilings.
If you have a low dining room ceiling, don't despair, there are still plenty of designs that deliver a dramatic impact and sense of style.
- Step 1 - Measure Table to Ceiling
Table heights differ, so use a tape measure to see how much room you have between the table top and the ceiling.
- Step 2 - Measure for Optimal Height from TableNo matter how low your ceiling, you'll want any hanging dining table lighting to be around 30 to 34 inches off the table. This height means that most lights will be out of direct eye line of seated guests, eliminating glare and distraction.
- Step 3 - Shop for a Dining Room FixtureNow that you have a rough idea of placement, it's time to see what's available. Depending on your taste in dining room lighting, there are any number of style and finish options available. Since you are looking for lighting for a room with a low ceiling, consider a pendant chandelier. These designs hang from an adjustable rod or wire and can be easily hung at the correct height. If you like a fixture that hangs from a chain, these designs can also be adjusted so they hang at the proper height.
- Step 4 - Other Lighting OptionsDepending on your ceiling, recessed or track lighting may also be good options for dining table lighting. Recessed requires room in the ceiling to be installed, but a track light hangs only a few inches from the ceiling, and is a great choice for small rooms with low clearances. Easiest option is a complete track kit that can be installed directly into a ceiling junction box.
