How to Use a Rectangular Chandelier

Providing beautiful and functional lighting for your dining room is a must, especially when you have a long dining room table. Consider a rectangular-shaped chandelier; as the name suggests, this type of chandelier is longer than it is wide, which allows for maximum lighting. These are often found over long, rectangular dining room tables or kitchen islands and act as a focal point to the room.

How Big Should A Rectangle Chandelier Be?

  • Your rectangular chandelier should be 1/2 to 2/3 the width of the table and about 12 inches narrower than the dining table surface.
  • Hang the bottom of the rectangular-shaped chandelier about 28 to 34 inches over the table if you have an eight-foot ceiling height.
  • If your ceiling height is higher than eight feet, mount the fixture another three inches higher for each extra foot of ceiling.
  • The design should be at least four feet from the room's walls and edges so that it can "float" with enough breathing room.

Can I Hang a Rectangular Chandelier Over a Round or Oval-Shaped Table?
  • Absolutely! You want to make sure your choice provides ample lighting without overpowering your guests. Depending on the chandelier, you can easily create a contemporary modern or farmhouse vibe for your room.
