BEST ANSWER:I haven't tried a 3way but judging on how the lamp functions, I am thinking it cannot. The first turn of the switch turns on the nightlight at the bottom, with the second turn the nightlight turns off and the main lightbulb turns on, with the third turn the nightlight and the main lightbulb are lit, and with the final turn both bulbs turn off. The main lightbulb we are using is LED with 1100 lumens. It gives off sufficient light for reading and we have not felt the need to have a 3 way bulb.
