A small traditional uplight table lamp with a mercury glass shade that creates a beautiful glow when the light is on.

Crafted in metal, this small table lamp will make a beautiful addition to a side table. The mercury glass shade diffuses the light creating soft ambient lighting. An in-line switch adds ease of use.

Is this suitable for a reading lamp on a table behind a sofa?

I would not use it for a reading lamp. It's better as an accent lamp. Its in our small front hall on an antique table and it looks very nice. Depending on the bulb,it can produce a lot of light. Its quite lovely eith the light shinning through the fristed glob.
Still. i think there are probably other lights that would better fit the need for a reading lamp.

I like the lamp very much for it's appearance and price but I'd recommend keeping the bulb to the 75 maybe 100 watt range and an energy saver to keep it low heat. I don't think that's enough light to read with. For reading find one that can safely handle a 150 watt and better one that can be pointed you where you are sitting. It's still a good lamp for the price.

It depends upon whether you need it for light or for atmosphere. The light is directed up, so it would be hitting the underside of the shelf above it. But if you want atmosphere, it would provide a nice warm glow. The amount of light you get can also be adjusted by the wattage of the bulb you use. We use ours on a console organ to illuminate sheet music and brighten a dark corner of our living room.
