As the fixture is now hanging from a vaulted ceiling, I cannot check but as I remember the shade has a wire crosspiece which just sits on the cage surrounding the bulbs. We are very pleased with it.
BEST ANSWER:The light is directly attached to a electric box and has a wall switch. I am sure the light can be swagged into a plug in the wall also. Aesthetically, direct attachment is the better option.

BEST ANSWER:Actually we have been wondering about that. We do have it on a dimmer but when it is at the lowest setting it tends to flicker. We love the lamp so will continue wih It on the dimmer. We just move it up a tiny bit and it’s just fine. Hope you will love the lamp as much as we do!

Does this light turn on on the light or do you have to have a switch on the wall? The light we have now turns on on the light its self. I was told that hanging lamps are only made to turn on at the wall switch.

You need a wall switch for this light fixture. That is something that a qualified electrician can very easily install for you. This is a beautiful fixture...

I am in the middle of installing this. What do I do with the extra 3-4 ft. of chain? Just cut it off? And with what type of tool? The instructions do not address this. Chain links seem to be welded, so opening with pliers doesn’t seem like will work

I finished installing this lamp and it is well-made and we are happy with it. But the instructions are not very good. They are typical of most instructions these days, obviously written by a non-English speaker. If you're installing it over a dining room table and you have an 8' foot ceiling, you need only 4 links on the chain (ie, the lamp is 64-inches from the floor). As HDBobby said, the chain links are thick pieces of iron and you can not them open with a pair of pliers. Most homes won't have the type of bolt cutters you'd need. I took them into the garage and used a hacksaw. I had to saw all the way through before I could use a pair of pliers. A good alternative -- which I was considering -- would be to go to the hardware store and buy chain at the right length (5 inches for the installation I described).

It's hardwired only. We had a handyman install ours since I don't like to mess with wiring. We love this fixture. It's looks great above our kitchen table. :)

I installed the Tremont in a room with a high ceiling (~ 14 foot), and had to cut the chain at around 60% of its length, if I recall. Seems like plenty of extra chain for most rooms, perhaps excepting very high vaulted ceilings, if installing at a low altitude above a dining table.

Therefore, if you are planning on hanging this in the center of the kitchen and there will be people walking under the fixture, it will be too tall for an 8 foot ceiling. However, if you plan on hanging it over an island or a table, it will be perfect!

I mounted it on an 8' ceiling and had to eliminate all but one link of chain and it came in right about 6' from floor to bottom of fixture. It is in a dining area so I suppose there will be a table under it. Everyone that walks through the house comments on how 'cool' it looks.
I have it hanging over a kitchen table and it's great. You could adjust the chain but that's part of what I love about it. If you don't have it over a table it would probably not work.
I am looking for a ceiling light for my office and need good lighting. I don't think Edison bulbs will be sufficient....would this lamp look good with regular bulbs??

I have this light over my kitchen table. Love it and have had many compliments on it. But yes, you are correct, the Edison bulbs would likely not be sufficient in an office. I think that regular bulbs would take away from the look of the light. : (

I love this lamp! It fits the steampunk/ old world design I have going throughout my house. The shade is removable but I like the texture it gives the piece. I have several other pieces in this collection &the only complaint I have is that I want the rest of the collection.

If it weren't for the fact that this particular fixture hangs crooked I'd have given it 5 stars. When the installer and I realized that it was actually a manufacturing issue it was after the lamp was already installed. I called about getting a replacement and was told I'd have to purchase another lamp and rebox the defective one. That meant I'd have to buy another fixture that was no longer on sale and pay to have the old fixture put back up and then again to replace the defective one. Not worth it, so I have a light that consistently hangs crooked. The shade is level, but the body of the cage pulls up on one side because it was misthreaded onto a permanent joint within the body of the fixture. Super disappointing to say the least.
I HAVE THIS BEAUTIFUL LIGHT HANGING IN THE HALLWAY ABOVE MY MAIN STAIRCASE. THE COMBINATION STYLING OF CLASSIC AND INDUSTRIAL IS PERFECT. LOOKS JUST LIKE THE PHOTO ONLINE. VERY PLEASE WITH THE AMOUNT OF LIGHT COMING FROM THIS PIECE.

The light looks great and it was pretty easy to assemble and hang. Only thing I didn’t love was the “rust” look of the metal. In the pictures it looked like a distressed, black metal (like wrought iron), but in real life it is brown with black speckles. I ended up painting the metal parts black, and I’m happy with it now.
I really love this light. I bought the LED special bulbs that go with it and the total look is a very refined industrial look. The shade is in just the right proportion to the overall light fixture and it really adds texture to a room. Would definitely recommend it.

Very nice fixture but because I was mounting it on an 8 ft flat ceiling it was a little tight trying to juggle the fixture and connect the wires with pretty much only 1 link of chain. Got it done though and it looks great.
Got the lamp immediately (2 day delivery over 400 miles), and in perfect condition. The lamp is beautiful, and was pretty easy to install. Assembly/installation directions inside were very clear, just to ensure I was doing the right thing. It comes with 3 "antique" bulbs, for a mid-level lighting brightness. Quite kid proof against flying balls and toys (which was the primary reason its predecessor needed replacing). Overall, very happy with this purchase, and well worth the price!
