Today we're excited to share some design inspiration and trends from Hinkley Lighting. We recently featured a gorgeous and inspiring Hinkley lighting video on Style Illuminated and we're thrilled to have Tom Patterson, Hinkley's director of product development here today chatting about the company's history (they've been in business since 1922!), where they find inspiration for their designs, and up-and-coming lighting trends.

LAMPS PLUS: Congratulations on Hinkley Lighting's 90th anniversary! How have you seen the company’s design vision grow and develop over the years?

TOM PATTERSON: Thanks! We're proud to have evolved to become one of the most well-respected designers and manufacturers of high-quality lighting fixtures in the world. We still keep a solid foundation in tradition and timeless, classic design, but over the years we began to diversify our product offerings while staying true to our history.

LAMPS PLUS: With the tagline LIFE AGLOW, Hinkley approaches lighting as an essential aspect in creating and enhancing a lifestyle – not just as a product to sell. Why did the company decide to take this unique approach?

TOM PATTERSON: Everyone in the Hinkley family understands and respects that your home is so much more than a physical place; it’s an emotional space and an extension of your personal style. LIFE AGLOW underscores our belief that light has the power to create different perspectives, rekindle emotions and provide protection for loved ones.

LAMPS PLUS: Your lighting ranges from classic and traditional to super chic and contemporary. Where do you find inspiration for your diverse array of indoor lighting?

TOM PATTERSON: Our designers find inspiration in a number of different areas. Many travel the world, focusing on trends in both interiors and fashion. We look at products that may have some relationship to the lighting industry, like plumbing fixtures or hardware, furniture and wall covering that would allow us to design coordinating products so that the consumer can create seamless ensembles in finish and in style throughout the home.

LAMPS PLUS: How about for Hinkley outdoor lighting?

TOM PATTERSON: We continue to look at our past and get inspiration from traditional styles and designs from different periods in history that we feel could be updated for today’s “cleaned up” traditional look.

LAMPS PLUS: What trends do you see coming in lighting design?

TOM PATTERSON: We see more and more natural and sustainable materials starting to take hold, mostly in the interior environment. Various woods and real wood veneers are making a comeback in both contemporary and traditional designs. Glass will continue to change into more organic textures and shapes with more emphasis on hand blown, unique pieces of art that become the focus of the design but that use more subtle color tones and solids with texture. And of course, LED will find its way into a number of interior and exterior lighting products.

LAMPS PLUS: We've noticed those trends too - especially the emphasis on LED lighting. What's the next big thing in lighting finishes?

TOM PATTERSON: Finishes seem to still be headed toward metallic variations with brushed nickel leading the way, but chrome and polished nickel continue coming on strong, as well as slight variations in brushed bronze tones.

LAMPS PLUS: What are your favorite Hinkley lighting collections available from Lamps Plus?

TOM PATTERSON: I love good clean contemporary design that has staying power as well as classic, well-made traditional. Some of my favorites include the Meridian Chandelier collection and the Lanza bathroom lighting family - it's just beautiful.

Blog Post: Decorating the Outdoor Terrace

I suppose you can gather from the past few posts that I am itching for summer. That said, I have put together some musings on outdoor terrace must-haves. Please pardon me if you are an apartment dweller with no outdoor space, but I hope to offer you some inspiring posts soon. From the smallest front porch to the wide covered veranda, there are easy ways to make your outdoor space comfortable, inviting and stylish. It doesn’t cost much to design a chic space, just imagination and having a few key items.

Like the image above that features a simplistically designed front porch, retro outdoor wall lights play a key role and make enjoying your outdoor space welcoming at night.

Another important element for a successful outdoor terrace is a place for dining. There is nothing more fun than dining al fresco on a summer night. As you can see, you don’t need a large and a sweeping yard to enjoy a meal outside. In fact, this homeowner has created a space right in front of the front door! When there’s a will, there’s a way. A quick note, if your terrace lacks trees and plants, potted boxwood, as seen in the terra cotta pots, are low maintenance and offer a major pop of greenery.

This tropical terrace dining space is calm, cool and collected, don’t you think? I can almost feel the trade winds. A coat of white paint can freshen up old and outdated furniture. If you have room, a side table to hold buffet items and hurricane lanterns will come in handy. A clever design touch in this image is the mirror placed on the wall. Using mirrors outside reflect the greenery of the landscape beyond.

Outdoor dining chairs are a must-have this summer. Not only will they stand up to the elements, they are easy to move around the yard, deck or terrace and can always be brought inside for additional seating. You can always keep folding chairs handy if you need extra seating and don’t want to commit to “official” outdoor furniture.

Along with dining chairs, soft, club chairs and lounges are key when it comes to lazy summer entertaining. How cute are the rolled towels as make shift pillows? If you have power outside, placing a glass outdoor lantern will make entertaining at night that much more enjoyable.

Fun in the sun, or at least in a porch. Some say if you paint the ceiling of a porch in pale blue it will keep bugs away. I’m not so sure about that, but it looks great.

Cheerful fabrics and pillows makes everything comfortable. Soft furnishings are a must if you want to infuse personality into your outdoor space.

If the weather is fine, don’t be afraid to bring pillows outside. Cheerful accent pillows can add just as much sunshine to a space without the hazardous rays.

We were so excited to interview Jessica of Black.White.Yellow. Jessica is no ordinary design blogger, she is also an architect! Therefore, she has a unique point of view and as you can see, she is inspired by black, white, and yellow hues.

LAMPS PLUS: What was the inspiration behind your blog, Black.White.Yellow?

JESSICA: I started {Black.White.Yellow} in 2007 when there was far fewer design blogs, no Pinterest, and it was more challenging to share and find inspiration. I wanted a place to share my projects and designs as well as things that I find inspiring.

LAMPS PLUS: What makes you love the hues black, white, and yellow so much?

JESSICA: I have ALWAYS loved the crisp contrast of black and white. The combination is so modern and clean. One day it occurred to me how often the color yellow appeared in images and designs that I liked, almost always in small doses and in combination with black and white. I love a bright pop of color to add a focal point to a clean black and white palette.

LAMPS PLUS: Being an architect, how do you differentiate your content compared to other design blogs?

JESSICA: I try to include inspiration from all sectors of design: architecture, interiors, art, fashion, and nature. I honestly don't intentionally make an attempt to distinguish the content of my blog, but we all have our unique perspective and put our own spin on things.

LAMPS PLUS: You went to school in New Orleans, but now live in Los Angeles. What do you love most about Southern California architecture and design?

JESSICA: I absolutely love the indoor/outdoor living aspect of Los Angeles.

LAMPS PLUS: What is your favorite home in Los Angeles?

JESSICA: One of my favorites is definitely the Stahl House, or Case Study House #22, designed by Pierre Koenig. It is such a perfect example of minimalist, modern architecture so perfectly suited for LA.

LAMPS PLUS: What is one trend that you wish would go away and one trend that you would like to last forever?

JESSICA: I LOVE real flowers and try to have fresh flowers in my house as often as possible. Floral inspired graphics are good, but generally speaking I'm not a fan of floral prints that are popular right now.

I have really embraced this neon pink trend and I kind of really don't want it to go away! It looks good with black, white, and yellow too!

LAMPS PLUS: What are 3 tips for making your house a home?

JESSICA:

Personal items: Incorporate personal items. It doesn't matter if the items are new or old (a combination is best), but they should be things that make you happy.
Art: Display art. It's easy to find great affordable art these days.
Texture: Include a mix of textures and materials.

LAMPS PLUS: How do you create dramatic lighting in a home?

JESSICA: It's important to strategically place lighting throughout your home and make sure it's the right intensity for the area.

LAMPS PLUS: What are your favorite architectural light fixtures from Lamps Plus?

Blog Post: Tips for Staying on Budget During Remodeling with Design Vidal

We were so excited to chat with Karen Vidal from Design Vidal again. This time we are discussing tips for staying on budget during remodeling.

LAMPS PLUS: A home remodel can easily become frustrating if you don't stay organized and on top of the budget. What are some tips for staying on budget during the renovation process?

KAREN VIDAL: There is a basic concept to remodeling that I feel most people are not aware of; the number that you get from a contractor is not the whole total. What this means is that the contractor is not the whole total. The contractor will do trades (plumbing, electrical, framing, etc.), but he will also do finish work (tile, hang light fixtures, install plumbing fixtures, etc.).

The trick is it's easy for the general contractor to assign budget numbers for labor and rough materials, but difficult for him to give numbers for lighting fixtures and appliances because there is a huge range and he might not have the same vision as the client. This is where budgets get out of control. The way I handle it is that I have everything chosen before the contractor starts. I know which sink, tub, faucet, tile, light fixture, flooring material, etc. that I am using.

LAMPS PLUS: How do you put together a more realistic budget allowing for the selection of your own fixtures?

KAREN VIDAL: I have a clear vision of my design. I provide my own numbers for all of what we call "allowances" (i.e. items that the client needs to supply the contractor) and combine that with the budget numbers from the general contractor. That way my client has a very clear understanding of the total money needed to achieve the desired renovation.

LAMPS PLUS: If the contractor's bid is too high, what are some tips for getting closer to your ideal price?

KAREN VIDAL: Scope of work drives budget. If the estimate for the work is too high, it's better to reduce the scope of work rather than compromise on materials or try to bid many contractors in the hope of finding someone who will say the number you want to hear - often that number will change as the job starts and things quickly get out of control. It's what we call a "bait and switch."

Blog Post: Top Five Decor Updates for Summer

My top five decor updates for summer are inspired by the interchange between indoors and out. Yes, it might be a tad too chilly to lay in the sun, and yes, it’s not quite Memorial Day, but it’s never too soon to dream of lazy days and a sun-kissed glow on your cheeks. That said, nothing says summer more to me than boldly striped awnings on an old fashioned porch. You can bring that lemonade-hazed feeling indoors with a variety of decor tricks. From simple striped cotton rugs and slipcovers to lighting, stripes add a bold and summery feel to interiors.

Fun flush mount striped kitchen ceiling lights like this giclee ceiling light might be the way to make a simple update to your home. Ceiling lights look great in kitchens, bathrooms, halls and bathrooms.

Obviously florals are a classic summer design theme. There is good reason that the British use floral chintz in their homes... the dreary English weather forces them indoors where they can only dream of summer days. Flowered fabric and accents keep an interior cheerful all year round.

Of course while floral fabric is a sure fire way to brighten a space, why not try something a tad more unexpected. This floral jar porcelain table lamp is a touch of the English Countryside without enduring jet lag. Because it is a bold choice for lighting, it will probably look good against and near simple, monochromatic walls and furniture.

Incorporating garden green is another way of bringing nature indoors. While applying a bold green trellis wallpaper may be way too much for you, including green as an accent in your home will instantly bring summer inside. After all, green is the color of nature.

I love fun accent tables in the “style of” garden seats. Personally I can’t get enough of small accent tables. They fit everywhere, from next to chairs and sofas to chaise lounges and desks. You name it, you will always have a need for these little rascals. The nice thing about small accent tables is that they are extremely portable. From moving them around the house to outside in the yard or on a balcony, they are the perfect piece of furniture.

While I would ever leave this chic polished nickel accent table outside, it does resembles a glamorous version of a rustic outdoor table.

Anything woven gives off a casual, almost island feel when brought indoors. Casual elegance is how most people want to live, so I think contemplating woven or rattan materials is “of the moment.”

Hello rattan-style poof! This woven cylinder stool is great for weary feet and extra seating for the kids. I suppose the only thing missing after you implement summer decor at home is the official start of summer.

Blog Post: Get the look: Shabby Chic, Eclectic Style

Page after page of wedding blogs and magazines across the globe feature gorgeous weddings with shabby chic touches, like pendant banners, tiny pastel accessories and paper-cut flowers. However, when it comes to our homes and businesses, currently we are crushing on a Mid-Century look a'la Mad Men. In Buenos Aires, however, the shabby chic, DIY look has never been hotter, with no shortage of cafes, restaurants and clothing and decor stores designed in this style. Below is a guide in how to achieve this eclectic look.

The key element of this look is mixing together contemporary home decor and vintage pieces in an "elegantly disheveled" way. None of the spaces appear cluttered, but if you take a closer look there are things everywhere. A tip to achieve this look is to make sure that everything is extremely organized. While there are a lot of accessories, as you can see, they are all placed with precision and spaced evenly.

Another key element of this look is scouring flea markets for the best vintage "everything" you can find. Picture frames, plates, cutlery, artwork and especially furniture can all be found with a good amount of time and effort spent at the flea market - or online thanks to sites like eBay. If the things you find have an endearing amount of wear, this only adds to the charm of the look. If you find a great piece that is a bit too tattered, remember that you can always repaint or reupholster anything as long as the bones of the piece are in good condition.

Lighting fixtures are often rustic and charming and give off a lot of light. There are no dark corners or mood lighting involved with achieving this look. Here you see vintage baskets that have been painted and strung upside down: instant chandeliers. Simple globe pendants offer a huge amount of light and don't detract from the details and accessories. Large windows let in a lot of natural light, which is important to the organic, rustic style.

Color is very important in achieving this look as well; those who are intimidated by color need not apply. Bright, bold primaries and pastels dominate, usually with a crisp white base. Feel free to mix as many colors as your heart desires, as you can see the more color, the more successful the look. Just make sure that you are within the same color temperature, don't use a maroon when a violet will serve better.

Even if you are not a DIY maven, you can easily find DIY-style accessories to complete your look. Handwritten notes for freshly baked pastries can easily be translated to the home; adding handwritten labels to storage jars in the kitchen, or cheeky quotes as wall art achieve this look. Using chalkboards and writing out notes is another way to personalize the look. Take an old frame, spray the glass with black matte spray paint and, voila, you have a repurposed chalkboard that you can use for reminders, shopping lists, to-dos and much more.

Don't be afraid to infuse this style into your life. It is very home friendly as the major characteristics of the look are rustic comfort and vintage charm, something that almost everyone can relate to on some level. And if all else fails, find some attractive Latin men and put them in vintage, eclectic aprons and you're good to go!

Blog Post: Natural Wood in Home Decor

Can we consider wood in its raw state as a design must? All of a sudden I am obsessed with natural wood in home decor. If you really think about it, almost every piece of furniture we buy for our homes is composed of wood. Some of it is manipulated to become a table or chair, some made of chips and pressed to be fashioned into shelves, but rarely left alone for us to enjoy its raw, natural beauty. It’s true that it is hard to find exceptional natural wood furniture that can look elegant, but when you do, wow. I’m not sure if I can call this glorious piece of wood a coffee table, but here goes... isn’t this coffee table a wonder to behold?

This organic and knotty wood coffee table has a lighter feel because of the metal legs. Don’t be put off by a great piece of wood just because you don’t know what to do with it. Remember you can always add legs and voila! I love how they have paired this table with refined, yet still organic elements such as the leather daybed and kilim pillows.

Here is a more bohemian version of the natural wood table. When left unpolished and unwaxed this table becomes more of an eclectic statement in this living room. Each item tells a story and is interesting on its own. The lesson here is to be unafraid when decorating. Unless you are afraid of cats...

A great way to use a natural piece of wood if it doesn’t offer a flat surface is to add a glass top. These nightstands are perfect in this room. Again, the organic materials reinforce this choice. The soft furs and fabrics as well as the light, paper shade bedroom ceiling lights counterbalance the hardwood tables.

The worn patina of this natural wood bench could certainly tell stories. The beautiful, organic lines on this seat reminds me of the branches of a tree, the kind that you climb and sit upon as a kid during summer. Now, when the thought of climbing a tree gives me the shakes, I can pretend I’m being adventurous, but fell much safer and close to terra firma.

Although this curved wood bench may not come straight from nature, it still offers an organic feel when it comes to comfortable seating.

Here, simple wooden planks have been fastened together to make a bedroom bench. Again, by simply adding legs to wood you can create something chic for very little money.

This highly burnished wooden table lamp gives the feel of an organic piece of wood, but maintains a practical use at home. I love wood table lamps for a bedroom or cozy side table. I’m not sure if it’s that I have lived too long in cities, but the tactile nature of a beautiful piece of wood feels soothing and always healing.

Our new blogger, Allison, is still scouring Buenas Aires for the best designs of the city. Today she is interviewing one of the city's great interior designers! Take it away Allison...

One of the hottest boutique hotels in Buenos Aires, the Miravida Soho, is a beautiful gem of vintage sophistication and elegance. It doubles as a hotel and upscale wine bar. I caught up with the designer, and friend, Paula Lemme Weihl, who now splits her time between Miami and Buenos Aires, designing and managing her new project - Obbolt. We chatted about the process of designing the hotel as well as her designer tips and inspirations.

LAMPS PLUS: Who is your design icon?

PAULA LEMME WEIHL: I greatly admire Zaha Hadid's work, but there are so many great designers that contribute to the way we live, work, and play everyday.

LAMPS PLUS: What is your design style?

PAULA LEMME WEIHL: It's hard to define one's own design style. There are a few aspects that repeat within my work. Contrast and dynamic are usually my two favorite words.

LAMPS PLUS: Whats your favorite accessory?

PAULA LEMME WEIHL: Casters. I like a space that can change depending on the mood or the occasion.

LAMPS PLUS: What inspired you to start your own design business?

PAULA LEMME WEIHL: Opportunity. I was lucky that people found my style interesting and I jumped at the chance to grow my business.

LAMPS PLUS: How important is lighting to your design?

PAULA LEMME WEIHL: I feel that without lighting, all your hard work is inconclusive. Lighting is the heart of the art within interiors. It brings everything to life.

LAMPS PLUS: What design trends do see lighting taking in the coming years?

PAULA LEMME WEIHL: Lighting has advanced a lot these past few years. I think we'll be seeing more objects and finishes with light. Light will become more of a finish or material within itself.

LAMPS PLUS: What is the best design advice you ever received?

PAULA LEMME WEIHL: Scale and Rotate. We are used to seeing things a certain way. By just scaling and rotating you will be amazed of what can come of it.

LAMPS PLUS: Where would you try to be thrifty and where would you splurge?

PAULA LEMME WEIHL: Splurge on function. You never want to compromise comfort or function for your clients. You can have fun and thrift for accessories or accent furniture.

LAMPS PLUS: When you started working on Miravida Soho where did you draw your inspiration from?

PAULA LEMME WEIHL: From what it originally was, an old french home in the bohemian neighborhood of Palermo in Buenos Aires. I love to resurrect the spirit of places.

LAMPS PLUS: Were you consciously thinking about the city and culture of Buenos Aires in your design?

PAULA LEMME WEIHL: Yes, throughout the entire process. It's not the same designing a space in Buenos Aires versus Miami. Nor is it the same to design a space in Puerto Madero than Palermo Soho. Each city, state, country has its own cultural influence that should be infused in the design within the location.

LAMPS PLUS: How did you address the fact that the hotel is also a distinguished wine bar?

PAULA LEMME WEIHL: I used masculine colors and textures while flirting with feminine shapes and details.

LAMPS PLUS: What was the biggest challenge with the project?

PAULA LEMME WEIHL: Space. All the spaces are reduced for the functions they needed to fullfil. This, however, gave me the opportunity to make each space original and unique.

LAMPS PLUS: I notice all the rooms have their own "feel." What would you say is the design decision that makes this most possible?

PAULA LEMME WEIHL: There are only 6 rooms. Miravida Soho needed to feel like you were staying at someone's house. Each room needed its own personality and at the same time I wanted it to all feel like they belonged to the same family.

LAMPS PLUS: What was your approach to lighting the rooms? How did it differ from lighting the rest of the space?

PAULA LEMME WEIHL: Miravida Soho is dim to accommodate a wine cellar feel. The rooms have this same effect, but we've added ceiling lighting to add a bit more light and to bring back this home-like feel as well.

LAMPS PLUS: What advice would you have for designers that are faced with a small, boutique project like Miravida Soho?

PAULA LEMME WEIHL: Don't be afraid of small spaces. Small spaces bring out the creative in you.

Blog Post: Renovation Ideas - Historical Craftsman Project Part 1

I was talking to interior designer, Karen Vidal of Design Vidal, a few weeks back about remodeling ideas for a historical craftsman home. She is an expert at restoring historical homes and has many years experience working in design and construction. Her latest project is a charming craftsman house in Los Feliz (Los Angeles), California, that needs a handful of updates to bring it back to its original glory.

Over the next few months, we are going to document the progression of the remodel and Karen is going to be offering remodel and design tips for specific rooms in the home. Today we are sharing the before pictures for the first post in the Renovation Ideas series with Design Vidal.

LAMPS PLUS: You have designed quite a few historical and Craftsman homes in Los Angeles, but really fell in love with this Los Feliz Craftsman. What makes this home so unique and special?

KAREN VIDAL: I think I fall in love with all the homes I design! The more I see the potential - that it's a place that I can truly transform - the better. This project is that kind of project; it feels like a home from back east with funny angles, the wide front porch, and the upstairs sleeping porch. It just sucks you in with it's charm.

LAMPS PLUS: What is your vision for the design of the home?

KAREN VIDAL: I see it as a family home with a farmhouse vibe. I am opening the kitchen up to the dining room and creating a counter between the two spaces so when someone is cooking they are not cut off from everything else that is happening. That's a big difference from how it was when we started.

The other radical re-do is the upstairs bathroom; I am still in the same footprint, but I have moved everything around. We built a large seperate shower and am putting in a double sink. It's the only bathroom for the 3 bedrooms upstairs, so it really has to work!

Both spaces will showcase lovely tile with quite a bit of added detail - deco liners, quarter round trim - details that will give it a vintage vibe and of course amazing bathroom and kitchen lighting fixtures.

Meanwhile, in terms of function everything will be totally updated - all new plumbing valves and fixtures, lighting with lots of seperate switching and dimmers, lots of outlets - so it's the best of vintage charm blended with modern functionality.

LAMPS PLUS: When remodeling Craftsman style homes, what special considerations do you make for this particular architectural style?

KAREN VIDAL: The finish choices are key: color, tile material, light fixtures, the style of moulding around doors and windows. These are the elements that are really going to establish the "Craftsman" look.

LAMPS PLUS: What is the general rule of thumb for knowing when building permits are required during a remodel?

KAREN VIDAL: Generally, in Los Angeles, you need a permit for everything that isn't just cosmetic. They have some general "remodel" permit designations if you are designing a kitchen or bathroom and only changing out finishes. More extensive work requires drawings to be submitted and reviewed in order to get the permit. The City of Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety (LADBS) website has all the information on permits. If you live outside Los Angeles, check with your local city agency regarding permits.

LAMPS PLUS: Developing a budget for a complete home remodel can seem very overwhelming. How do you approach the budgeting process?

KAREN VIDAL: Experience! We have done this so much we have it down, but there was a huge learning curve. Now we have a budget form that we have developed and we keep a running job actual so we know where we are at all times.

LAMPS PLUS: What is your advice for hiring and working with contractors?

KAREN VIDAL: Make sure you go and see finished jobs, talk to previous clients, check out their license online with the Contractor's Board, make sure you can communicate easily and share a vision - you will be working together for some time and it's always easier to work with someone you like.

Also, consider working with a designer! We are not a luxury, but a necessity! I know that I save my clients time and money by knowing what they need to provide the contractor and when. I also establish the look of the job and make sure everything is conforming during the renovation. I am able to purchase materials at a discounted price. I talk to the contractor about any issues that arise - aesthetic or budgetary.

LAMPS PLUS: Are all contractors required to have a license for their particular trade? If not, what types of construction professionals must have a license to perform their trade?

KAREN VIDAL: General contractors have a General license, bond and worker's comp. Depending on the general contractor, he may also work with subcontractors who have their own license for their trade - commonly plumbers and electricians. But the general contractor is ultimately responsible for the work of everyone on the job.

LAMPS PLUS: What is the next step in the renovation process?

KAREN VIDAL: Things will start to close up. I will finish all of my rough work, framing electrical, plumbing, and start to put up drywall. We will begin prepping the bathroom for the tile, and the cabinets will start getting fabricated.

Blog Post: Shades of Grey Interiors

Who needs 50 when the perfect shade is all you need. Do you like my literary reference? I always knew that fashion could influence home interiors, but it’s refreshing that books can do the same. Shades of grey are the new neutral and allow you to do so much with accent colors or you can simply leave it as a soothing monochromatic backdrop in your calming abode. Speaking of backdrop, the first way to incorporate grey into your home is with paint. Look how the simple act of painting the back wall of this bookshelf helps to make the decorative objects pop. It’s so much more chic than white or cream.

This study is a washed-down version of grey. The pale wood tones and cream marry harmoniously with the pale grey linen sofa and chalky grey table lamp. This room is a perfect example to show how grey has become a standard neutral color in interior furnishings and home decor.

Table lamps need not always be chrome or ceramic. This grey leather buffet lamp is amazingly beautiful. It’s sleek and modern and the nickel finish makes the simple design shine.

Grey or monochromatic artwork can also be a way to make a pale grey room more interesting and give it motion. Photographs can work wonders. This large scale image of horses balances the simple deco design scheme. It also makes the Jean Harlow inspired room totally up-to-date.

What about a bold but still subtle wallpaper? Although this leaf pattern wallpaper is busy in design, the soothing grey color turns it into a simple and almost monochromatic backdrop for the series of drawings.

Could these simple grey traditional dining chairs be more understated? Pale grey is the order of the day throughout this room. From the simple paint to the charcoal grey lamp shades.The unadorned windows let in light to counter the deeper tones.

This Belgian still life is harmony and simplicity at its best. Could anything ever go wrong in a room like this?

Lamp shades can change the look of any room. This classic trellis pattern would look great on white or clear Lucite lamps.

Grey leather? Why not. Consider the glamour grey can add when paired with chrome, white lacquer and Lucite.

Of course my literary referenced post must end with a luxurious bedroom shot, n’est pas? While I have yet to read the 50 Shades of Grey, based on what I have heard, I throught it was a fitting end.

Blog Post: DIY: Designer Decoupage and Beyond

Who says the best designs require an unlimited budget? Some of my favorite looks are actually DIY design ideas! It's all about rolling up your sleeves, getting creative, and finding the hidden potential in an old piece. Not sure where to begin? Try decoupage!

I love decoupage because it allows me to bring in so much self expressionism and personality! Whether you're using fabulous wallpapers, old playing cards, or even sheets of music, you can showcase your vibe and what matters to you most with the material you choose to cover your furniture. Best of all, it's eco-friendly, budget friendly DIY design, and makes something old new again.

Do you love a wild wallpaper print but don't feel ready to commit to using it on an entire wall? Incorporate the look with decoupage. All you need is white glue or decoupage medium (available at any craft store) and a paint brush or cotton swabs. Tips: start from the center and work out, pressing out any wrinkles or bubbles as you go.

Are you bored with your old lamps, candlesticks, or door knobs? Try having them plated in nickel or white brass for a sleek and chic makeover. I especially love white brass and have been using it in clients' homes for a while now. It's a great middle ground between gold and silver and having old pieces dipped in white brass will create a major transformation for little money. White brass works especially well in a bathroom, but to really reinvent your look throughout your home, try plating your hinges and hardware, too!

Lighting illuminates your home, but it can also illuminate your mood. Covering an old lampshade in a fresh, new fabric is another one of my favorite DIY design ideas. Find a swatch of fabric that puts a smile on your face or spices up your interior and recover an existing shade with a little patience and a good old fashioned glue gun. Or, skip the hard labor entirely and just design your own art shade light.

Growing up studying art and art history, I was always fascinated and intrigued by 19th and 20th century art and artists like Henri Matisse, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Pablo Picasso, and Rene Magritte. I love wall art with bright color, interesting texture, and layers of meaning, and found home decor inspiration in the rainbow palette, vibrant energy, and coastal inspired forms that Henri Matisse used in this piece titled La Gerbe.

La Gerbe was created late in Matisse's career out of paper cut-outs, which have become his best-known art form. Drawing from his use of graphic pattern, bold color, and organic lines, I created a home decor mood board that exudes the same vibrant energy as Matisse's famed artwork. Home decor inspiration can come from anywhere (I've even found interior design inspiration from fashion!), so keep your eyes open and a notebook handy to jot down your inspired ideas.

Blog Post: Polka Dots in Sophisticated Interiors

Forget everything people told you about polka dots being juvenile and only worthy of a kitschy 1950s storyline. Yes, dots can look “whimsical” and childlike if done poorly, but who is going to tell Damien Hirst that his dot paintings that command millions belong in a nursery! This living room is done in a sophisticated and masculine color scheme which is only elevated with the inclusion of the subtle gray dot work of art. Designer dots are here to stay.

Here is another living room that has a fantastic Damien Hirst dot painting. Although this painting is colorful, the crisp, monochromatic colors of the room allow the artwork to pop and at the same time offers a neutral background on which to appear very grown-up.

Fretwork is another way to introduce dots into your home. Sometimes creating negative space makes something more interesting. This unique brass ceiling light not only introduces a dot pattern into this narrow hall, but when illuminated, casts a wild dot pattern on the walls. Two times the dots for the price of one light!

This blown glass table lamp is another artistic way to add color and interest into any room with lighting. It’s cheerful, but not insipid and has a fresh spring feel.

Like I said, polka dots can make you crazy unless done well. If your child insists on painting polka dots in their room, why not consider a more mellow and modern palette. This room does not go overboard because the dots don’t cover the entire four walls and are done in a more modern, copper color. So much easier on the eye.

Talk about modern! This wavy dot patterned sliding wall panel is amazing. It’s totally contemporary and sculptural. The pattern creates such movement that the materials feel almost organic.

This polka pocket door is created by placing a fretwork polka dot panel over a simply painted panel. It looks great and seems to be an easy DIY project. Not that I would attempt it...

I love this dot tile. Dot tiles come in a zillion shades and materials, from ceramic to marble. They look amazing in bathrooms as well as on a kitchen backsplash. You must agree that this tilework is designer, not diner, quality. An easy way to introduce dots to a bathroom if you have plain walls would be to buy polka dot replacement shades for your wall sconces.

Another easy way to add energetic dots without breaking the bank, would be to paint an old piece of furniture with the pattern or start super slow with polka dot linens or a game of twister!

When I found out I would be returning to Buenos Aires, Argentina, with my husband for work, I could not pass up the opportunity to catch up with my friend, and founder of Oasis Collections, Parker Stanberry. We chatted about everything from designing South American vacation properties to the ultra chic, members only Oasis Club House.

LAMPS PLUS: What brought you to Argentina in the first place?

PARKER STANBERRY: I had been in New York for 8 years and I felt I should go live internationally at some point in my life. I was planning on staying for 6 months, like a lot of people say when they first come down here…

LAMPS PLUS: How did the conception of a design-centric vacation rental agency come about?

PARKER STANBERRY: Along with investors, we purchased about 15 units and restored and decorated those units. After a few years of exploring the market, I began to reach out to existing property owners to create a network of individually owned properties that were exceptionally designed. We thought there was a market for a boutique hotel chain-like portfolio of rental properties around South America.

LAMPS PLUS: How would you characterize your design aesthetic?

PARKER STANBERRY: I think I could characterize my aesthetic as taking a cue from the uses of the property, what was it before, and what it has going for it. If there is a place that has exposed brick walls and is on the darker side, and it is never going to feel bright and modern, then go with that. I never come into a place and say this is exactly what I want, it's about working with what is there.

LAMPS PLUS: What would you say would be your design "calling card"?

PARKER STANBERRY: I like to include one bright pop of color, either through a painted wall or a large piece of art. I generally like to keep the furniture and the flooring in a muted, neutral palette so I bring character through the accent color.

LAMPS PLUS: What was the biggest design challenge with the Club House?

PARKER STANBERRY: We had to completely remodel the outdoor space. It was a gently rolling grass backyard, so, along with LA based designer Jon Padgett, we added in multiple levels to create more separation between the areas. We built the pool so that you could see across the top when seated below. We added in the tile flooring and steps, built the bar, carved out the shelving for the back bar, built the parilla (a staple in Argentina, it means barbecue) and built outdoor bathrooms from a storage room.

LAMPS PLUS: I notice a pop of burgundy around the Club House. What was the inspiration behind that color choice?

PARKER STANBERRY: A lot of times white and dark colors, like black or blue, are standard so we wanted to do something a little different. We used burgundy on the bar stools and the sofas on the terrace are in a burgundy velvet. The terrace is a transitional room, it is an outside space but the furniture is typically indoor furniture, so we used the burgundy to tie the spaces all together.

LAMPS PLUS: I love how you converted the garage into a warm and comfortable bar, will you tell me a little bit about the renovation of this space?

PARKER STANBERRY: The other big project aside from the outdoor space was the garage, which we use as our wintertime bar area. We had to build out the floor, ceiling and walls and we covered the walls in velvet curtains. We found the bar at the Mercado de Pulgas (Flea Market) and customized it to the space.

LAMPS PLUS: I notice the lighting of the converted garage bar is different from the rest of the house.

PARKER STANBERRY: We chose to have the space dimly lit, with recessed lighting around the edges and drum pendants over the pool table. We further accented the dimly lit space by picking out vintage furniture and accents and mixing them with custom pieces.

LAMPS PLUS: Why did you choose to decorate the Club House in the style that you did?

PARKER STANBERRY: One of the things I don't like about design in Buenos Aires is the idea that anything "high end" needs to be ultra modern and minimalist. Since the club house used to be a home, we wanted a more comfortable, vintage feel with polish.

LAMPS PLUS: How did you address lighting in the Club House?

PARKER STANBERRY: There is a different feel in the Club House than in a home. You are going for softer, mood lighting. We have all the lights on dimmer, so we can turn them down at night and outside we utilize candlelight and hanging string lights. We added all the hanging lights and floor lamps inside, but the track spotlights were already here. The owners of the property hang their Warhol series here, so they had the lights installed to accent the paintings. We are also working with a couple of local art galleries to have rotating paintings featured as well. It's a great way to incorporate local artists into the design.

Keep an eye out for Oasis Collections properties coming to Miami and New York within the next few months. If you have vacation plans in the future, it is an excellent, ultra design-conscious alternative to a hotel.

Blog Post: 8 Tips on Styling a Bookshelf

Between my love for art and design books and my husband's ever-growing collection of grad school reading material, it's safe to say that we have a lot of books. With the variety of shapes, sizes, and colors of books we've collected, it's easy for our humble white bookshelf to look cluttered. However, thanks to a few tips and tricks, we've transformed it into a stylish space where we can enjoy and appreciate our collection. Here are my top 8 tips on styling a bookshelf:

1. Group books by color. This is the number one piece of advice I can offer! Arranging books by color helps things flow, creates visual harmony, and just looks great. (Bonus points if you take it one step further by arranging those colorful stacks in rainbow order.)

2. Get organized with bookends. Contain your books in style with bookends. Not only do they keep your stacks of tomes orderly, they're also a great way to infuse your bookshelf with a little personal style (whether that be your penchant for puppies, your adoration of architecture, or your soft spot for sports).

3. Leave space. A little breathing room on a shelf is a good thing. Don't cram your shelves too full, unless you're going for the "eccentric librarian" look.

4. Remove dust jackets. Dust jackets on hardcovers are designed to protect the books while on display in the store. Once the book is yours, you're free to take that cover off and appreciate the chic hardbound book beneath.

5. Go horizontal. Mixing vertical rows with horizontal stacks adds visual interest and a dose of personality. These horizontal stacks also provide a great platform to accessorize on.

6. Personalize it! Bookshelves don't have to hold just books! My collection of vintage cameras is showcased. I sometimes display rings and necklaces. I love the look of white ceramic vessels among the busy titles. Treat your bookshelf as a display, as a vignette, and make it lovely to look at. (Bonus: use spray adhesive to attach wallpaper to the inside back of the shelf - it makes even a plain white bookshelf look special.)

7. Don't forget the top. That underappreciated shelf on top is just dying for a little attention. Although it won't be the first thing that people see, it's a great place to highlight a little something special.

8. Change it up. Have fun! Move things around. Swap out accessories. Treat your bookshelf as an ever-evolving work of art and appreciate how your mundane reading material brings a solid dose of personal style to your space.

Returns of Online Purchases

You may return any online purchase to us within 60 days of receiving it. Please note that sales of clearance items, giclee items personalized with uploaded photos, and custom made-to-order items are final.

Pending inspection, a refund will be issued to you for the value of the item including taxes. All shipping charges on returns are non-refundable. For freight returns a $99 pick-up fee will be deducted from your return once the credit is processed.

Tabletop decoration is much more that tossing a book and a candle on table and hoping for the best. Yes, I know that the art of tabletop design is not as important as curing world hunger, but if you want your home to look designer-done, take note. The two major elements to keep in mind when designing a perfect tabletop are balance and texture. I have decided to only feature console, coffee, and end tables, as dining tables are usually left bare unless entertaining.

Console tables are the most fun to merchandise. First, they are usually placed up against a wall so items have a backdrop and anchor. Second, unlike night stands, they have more surface space to adorn. Time to shop! Here is an example of great balance, texture and interest. The brass table lamp anchors the left side and is balanced by decorative items in stone, coral, silver and ceramic. Generally a variety is best unless you are displaying a collection. In that case it’s fantastic to have a table full of one material such as glass, silver or ceramics.

I can’t get enough of this entryway chest. It’s seriously my favorite. Take note of the various heights, materials and textures. Stacked books are a great way to add height and texture. The painting is much needed as a selection of small objects would look lost without a visual backdrop. Also, it’s ok to have lampshades cover part of a painting’s canvas, truly. I take that back, if you have an original Picasso or Renoir, you should maybe think twice about covering any inch of it...just my 10 cents.

Symmetry is another way to deal with a longer console table. A pair of clear glass table lamps flank the painting and balance the table decoration. Check out the varying sizes of picture frames and even smaller decorative items that are placed in front for interest and depth. Nothing quite covers the item placed behind - it’s more about creating a slight layered affect.

Here is a similar design. Look at the fantastic finishes and textures: burled wood, stone, mother-of-pearl and leather... divine.

End tables are also another place to display treasures. If your table is in a corner or against a wall, like with the console tables, place your lighting toward the back to add height and to illuminate the items on the table. How amazing is the even smaller clear table layered in front?

Coffee tables are front and center so don’t forget to apply the same rules. Be mindful of people conversing across the space so only place taller items in areas that won’t block views.

This coffee table displays a variety of items but they are all low slung for the reasons I explained above. I think they have done an amazing job of balancing the brass tones from table to table and even on to the contemporary wall sconces. No reason that the texture of an item on a table can’t be repeated throughout a space.

Night stands are another surface to think about. I know that we all have necessities like clocks, glasses, watches and books, but why not make all of them look chic? If I don’t have or use a swing arm wall sconce, I love using an adjustable table lamp. Whether you read in bed, work on a laptop, or needlepoint, task lighting is very important at night.

I like to call this image, balance and harmony. It’s layered, textured and well-balanced. Perhaps it should be titled, “Perfection.”

We were absolutely delighted last week when we saw our Pewter Candle Light Pedestal Lamp featured in the tiny lamps roundup in House Beautiful! They are perfect for illuminating snug spaces and are flat-out adorable. Now these teensy weensy lights are making headway in the most unsuspecting places, including kitchen countertops and bathroom vanities.

Bringing a mini table lamp into the kitchen can serve many purposes. Not only is it a more decorative and non-permanent solution to under-cabinet lighting, but it also evokes feelings of warmth and comfort, which is exactly how the kitchen should feel.

This stunning miniature crystal lamp brings a romantic, feminine quality to this bathroom vanity while softening the look of the distressed vintage wall cabinet.

Tiny table lamps can also be quite playful when paired with a stack of books like in the image above. Where are some interesting places you would use a tiny lamp?
