Luxury interior designer Sandra Espinet designs some of the finest estates in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Her signature look is sought out by clients looking for a coastal retreat with furnishings from around the globe.

Besides designing for a high end clientele, Sandra can be found sharing her aesthetic on shows such as HGTV'd (episode will premiere Saturday, September 10th at 8PM et/pt), Bang for Your Buck (HGTV), HGTV's Celebrity Holiday Homes 1, 2, and 3, HGTV Halloween Block Party, and HGTV's My Favorite Place.

Sandra Espinet sources Lamps Plus light fixtures to pull together the last touches for a space. We caught up with Sandra to talk inspiration and her favorite Lamps Plus lighting fixtures.

LAMPS PLUS: How would you describe your style?

SANDRA ESPINET: My style is very eclectic and traveled. Most of my clients are extremely well traveled and they enjoy living with beautiful handmade and unique pieces from exotic places they have been to.

LAMPS PLUS: Where do you find inspiration for your projects?

SANDRA ESPINET: Inspiration comes from everywhere. Sometimes I just look out the window and see the beautiful ocean and I'm inspired. Other times it's from travel and other times it can simply be a crazy idea that comes to me at 3AM! You just have to be ready to write or click at any time because you never know where a good idea will come from. I always have a digital camera with me as well as pen and paper.

LAMPS PLUS: How is designing for television different from designing for clients?

SANDRA ESPINET: Doing TV is very different than real life design. TV is all about bright fun colors as well as a fast pace environment - doing whatever it takes to get it done.

In real life we take much longer, we have the ability to do custom items that have long lead times and we don't have to worry about the crew walking all over the rugs!

As crazy as TV is, it's a lot of fun and very rewarding in it's own way. It's always exciting to see your room transform on TV, but nothing can replace the feeling of seeing real life clients' faces for the first time they walk into their newly decorated home. It's a great pleasure.

LAMPS PLUS: What is your favorite paint color?

SANDRA ESPINET: Like everything in life, color taste changes. It depends on the location, the room, and the client. Right now my favorite nail color is Tiffany box blue, my favorite colors are sage green, and my favorite lipstick color is coral.

LAMPS PLUS: What is the most common decorating mistake people make?

SANDRA ESPINET: Buying an entire "set" of anything. A dining room that is completely matched or a bedroom that is all from the same collection starts to look like a furniture store and has no character.

The best way to design a room is to start with one piece you can't live without and then work around it to fill in the blanks.

LAMPS PLUS: What advice would you give clients working with interior designers for the first time?

SANDRA ESPINET: Take the time to preview the designer's work and make sure you like their taste. It's always hard to relinquish your home to another person, but if you like a designer's portfolio most likely you will enjoy the end product when they deliver your home.

LAMPS PLUS: If you were designing a bedroom and had only $500, what would be your must-have furnishings?

SANDRA ESPINET: I am a huge fan of great sheets, so I would invest in the best sheets I could. We spend 8 hours a night on a bed, so having comfortable bed linens is imperative if you plan on getting a restful night and feel cocooned in your bed. The bedroom is the place you relax and rest your soul, so you can be energized for the following day.

LAMPS PLUS: What are your top 3 favorite bedroom table lamps from Lamps Plus?

SANDRA ESPINET:  Here are a few of my favorities.

  • great article and insights...interesting.  My feeling is that if I had $500 to spend on something I would look for a really great chair because you can always get linens down the road but a really great chair gives you something to hold down the room while you are building the design plan; you can read, sit with a glass of wine and look out the window, and pull a fluffly throw over you for cool evenings.  But that's just me and my design ideas.
