5 Features to Look for in a Ceiling Fan

Buying a fan doesn’t have to be complicated. We spoke with Lamps Plus ceiling fan buyer Dee Dee Glazer to learn the secrets of choosing a fan that’s right for you.

There are several important considerations to look at when purchasing a ceiling fan:

Factors such as the motor, blades, and installation are important to consider when selecting the perfect fan for your home.

1. Motor size and Blade Pitch

Not all fans are created equal, so you need to make sure you know what you are buying.

Look for the motor size and blade pitch on each model and compare. The motor is the most important piece of the fan, so if you’re spending a lot of money, you’ll want to make sure you’re getting a premium fan motor.

For blade pitch, the higher the pitch, the more air a fan will move.

Take into consideration the room size and the way the room will be used when looking at a fan. For example, with a small bedroom you might not require a larger fan.

2. Workmanship and Design

A fan should not only be functional, it should also be beautiful to look at! A fan can truly enhance a room space, either by subtlety accenting the existing décor or by adding a new visual look.

Don’t settle for a run-of-the-mill style; look for something exciting and in an innovative design. Our Design Your Own Ceiling Fan section is a great place to experiment with different looks and styles.

3. Selections and Options

Don’t settle for an out-of-the-box solution. A fan is a big investment, so make sure you customize your fan to match the way you’ll be using it.

Options include remote controls, ceiling fan light kits, decorative ceiling medallions, and a wide variety of finishes for the motor and fan blades. In addition there are different lengths of down rods available based on your ceiling height.

4. The Ceiling Fan as Lighting Fixture

Don’t overlook using the fan as a lighting source for your home. Many fans either come with an integrated light kit or have a light kit available as an option.

5. The Ceiling Fan as an Investment

A well designed ceiling fan will become part of your home, providing a cooling breeze in summer and helping move warm air throughout your home in the winter.

Using ceiling fans can save money on energy, as well as adding value and beauty to your home.
