  • New - Energy Efficient Window Treatments

With winter fast approaching, we spoke with our friend Esther at about energy efficiency and window treatments. She offered these tips we think you'll find interesting.

"Like turning lights off and taking shorter showers, installing energy efficient window treatments makes a huge difference in your energy consumption.

Your house is not air-tight; there are tiny cracks between your walls and windows, just big enough for your costly heat to escape, or for frigid Winter air to creep in when you’re trying to stay warm. 5% of Detrimental Energy Loss occurs through those cracks. Unlike walls, which have insulation built right in, your windows usually need extra help. If winterizing your home is a priority for you this year (and it should be), consider thermal shades.

Enter the Super Insulating Triple Cell Shade from

New to, this shade does an incredible job of keeping your home toasty warm in the Winter and blocking that hot Summer sun. Cellular shades are one of the most popular categories on the market, and all cell shades – also called honeycomb shades – do a fairly good job of insulating. The Super Insulating Triple Cell Shade, with its 3-cell system creates the best shield to Mother Nature on the market.

These shades have a very high insulating R-value (resistance to heat flow) of 3.66, more than doubling the energy efficiency of a double-glazed window and nearly quadrupling the efficiency of a single pane of glass. For older homes, they’re especially useful because older homes often have older windows, which don’t always do the best job of protecting the home from the elements, though all windows can benefit from this extra layer of insulation.

They’re easily customizable for homes with small children and pets and come in lots of designer colors. Parents love that they can be ordered cordless or with top down / bottom up, to preserve privacy but still let light in.
For more questions about winterizing your home with blinds and shades, visit or call us at (800) 505-1905 and speak to a Design Consultant, who will help you pick the perfect product."

    Thanks for the info, Esther!

  • Jonathan Adler Video

Found on YouTube, GQ's Adam Rapoport visits the Jonathan Adler's NYC showroom and pottery studio. The clip has a nice behind the scenes look at the Jonathan Adler empire, and there are a couple of related videos in the series.

I always love seeing this type of thing about designers. I think you get a much better appreciation of their work and personality from a video.

In this piece, look for some of the Jonathan Adler lighting designs in the store shots!

  • Three for Thursday: Globe Table Lamps

    Globe Brushed Steel Table Lamp

In today's contemporary and transitional room, the angular and straight-edged tends to predominate. It's nice to mix in elements with curves to play against this trend. Which leads us to globe table lamps! These designs offer a play of round form that works well with any number of room designs. Here are three for your Thursday!

  • Yo, Vanilla Ice Is a Home Renovator!

Rapper Vanilla Ice is back, but not in the way you might think! He has a new home renovation show called (not surprisingly) The Vanilla Ice Project. It airs on the DIY Network every Thursday at 9 p.m. (ET/PT).

From Ice Ice Baby in the early 1990s, Mr. Ice, aka Robert Van Winkle, moved to buying property and flipping houses. The TV show follows Ice and his crew as they renovate a 7,000-square-foot Mac-mansion in Palm Beach, Florida.

The episode I watched had him installing high-end landscape lighting and updating the garden lights and backyard pool. We'll have to see if the house turns out more metal or more hip hop!

Click the video above for a peek at the show.

  • Thanksgiving Table Accents

    Faux Flower Arrangement

From Veronica, our home decor buyer, here are some ideas to give your Thanksgiving table decorations extra holiday spirit this year.

"Dried and silk flowers always strike a festive note. I also really like the fact that they can be reused year after year. This arrangement has wonderful Fall, Thanksgiving colors with silk hydrangea and ranunculus flowers." Hydrangea and Ranunculus Faux Flower Arrangement.

    Traditional Candle Holders Set

"Candlesticks are a welcome addition to any Thanksgiving table. Move them to a side table or buffet for the main seating. This set of three has a lovely distressed finish." Bronze Urn Candle Holders.

    Bronze Finish Decorative Bowl

"A decorative bowl is a quick way to add interest to the center of your table. You can display fruit or seasonal items like mini pumpkins and squash. The one I've picked (seen above with matching items and wall clock) has ornate detailing with a bronze finish and crackle amber finish accents." Bronze Crackle Scrollwork Decorative Bowl.

    Mahogany Finish Serving Trays

"Finally, I always like to have a supply of serving trays nearby on Thanksgiving day. Use them to move things to and from the table, or to serve after meal coffee and desert. They come in handy for clean-up, too! The set of three I'm showing gives you even more flexibility."  Set of 3 Hanley Trays.

Thanks for the input, Veronica! Look for more on our home decor page.
