If you want to see experimental lighting and happen to be in New York this Fall, check out Provoking Magic, the Ingo Maurer exhibit at the Cooper-Hewitt museum. The exhibit opened on September 18th and is up until January 27th.

Mauer is known for work that defies the separation between design and sculpture.

Witty titles and unusual materials reveal  layers of meaning in his pieces. Maurer also shows a profound understanding of how to shape and direct light.

With a typographer's eye, Maurer spaces diffusers and reflectors so precisely that he achieves stunning effects. Provoking Magic catalogues Maurer's experiments with a large variety of materials from handmade paper to programmable motherboards, to gold.
