What is Linear Track Lighting?

What is linear track lighting?

  1. Linear track lighting is made up of different lengths of straight, or linear, track sections. The track usually comes in 4-foot or 8-foot lengths. This is the type of track lighting that most people are familiar with, and it's fully configurable so you can get the exact look you want for your room space.
  2. You connect the track together with different components and use elbow-shaped pieces to make a turn. There are also T-shaped connectors so you can have a run of track heading in a different direction from the main span.
  3. Different companies make lengths of linear track under their own brand name. When shopping, just remember to buy linear track pieces from the same brand to make sure they work with each other.
  4. Each track layout needs to terminate at a track feed. This component is sold separately from the linear pieces and connects to a ceiling junction box. The track feed provides the connection that powers the full run of the track.
  5. To figure out how much straight track you'll need, measure you room. Then plan out how you'd like the track arranged and where you'd light to place lights. From this you can figure out which pieces of track you'll need.
  6. For lights, a good rule of thumb is to use one per each foot of rail track. You can use less depending on your individual needs.
